It spends anywhere from nine to 12 months in oak. The mouthfeel is soft, and there is some sweetness here as well. Fruit comes from Darling on the Western Cape and Wellington. Anthonij Rupert Wines is part of the historic L'Ormarins farm in Franschhoek and is surely one of the most luxurious properties in the Western Cape, with beautiful Cape Dutch architecture and a little trolley that drives you though manicured vineyards. The estate has six wine brands, and my tasting definitely ran longer than expected as a result. The property was acquired in 1968 by businessman Dr. Anton Rupert, but management passed over to his son Anthonij Rupert in 1984. He restored the historic buildings and started the wine program. Following his untimely death in 2001, his brother Johann Rupert assumed management and transformed the estate into one of the country's most prestigious wine destinations. A technology-heavy gravity-flow cellar was completed in 2005. Like the inside of a precision watch, the cellar has a revolving ceiling (made with 27 tons of steel) that allows for better access to 12 conical steel and 12 oak fermenters. The celebrated consultant Rosa Kruger played a significant role in the development of Anthonij Rupert Wines in the early 2000s. She was also instrumental in creating the Cape of Good Hope range that showcases wines made from heritage vines found across the Western Cape. The winemaking team is headed by Dawie Botha.
